Residents of Molokai were in Oahu this week to protest their water bills.

Group coordinator Walter Ritte says the cost of residential water on the island has gone up 178 percent.

About 20 Molokai residents visited the governor’s office and Public Utilities Commission offices Thursday in a peaceful protest. Ritte said Molokai shouldn’t have bigger increases than other islands.

He said Molokai Public Utilities is charging $6.04 for 1,000 gallons, up from $3.18.

Gov. Linda Lingle’s chief of staff, Barry Fukunaga, met with the group and said one reason for the big increase is that past increases.
